The three most common coating materials for solid carbide end mill are titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbonitride (TiCN) and titanium nitride-aluminium nitride (TiAIN).

Titanium nitride coating can increase the hardness and wear resistance of tool surface, reduce friction coefficient, reduce the generation of chip tumors and prolong tool life. Solid carbide end mill is suitable for processing low alloy steel and stainless steel.

The surface of titanium carbide and nitride coating is grey, its hardness is higher and its wear resistance is better than that of titanium nitride coating. Compared with titanium nitride coatings, titanium carbide coated tools can be machined at higher feed and cutting speeds (40% and 60% higher than titanium nitride coatings respectively), and the material removal rate of workpieces is higher. Titanium carbonitride coated tools can process various workpiece materials.

Titanium nitride coating is gray or black. It is mainly coated on the surface of carbide tool base. It can still be machined when cutting temperature reaches 800 C.Solid carbide end millis suitable for high-speed dry cutting. Chips in the cutting zone can be removed by compressed air during dry cutting. Titanium aluminium nitride is suitable for processing brittle materials such as hardened steel, titanium alloy, nickel-based alloy, cast iron and high silicon aluminium alloy.
